NSPCC number day

Learning about the NSPCC and using Real life maths.

We used our math’s skills to research the best value for in school and out of school treats for after SATs. We discussed the price of a coach, taking public transport or the possibility of being able to walk.

We now understand how expensive it actually is for 30 children to go out for the day.

Shackleton Drama

Today, we brought some of the images of Shackleton Journey to life through conscience alley and freeze frames.

We used illustrations from our class reader Shackleton Journey written by William Grill. We had a lot of fun adding our own conversations, thoughts and ideas to these images.

Year Six – collective worship

Week 1 – Sharing the mercy of God with others

Today, we planned and lead our collective worship focusing on sharing Mercy with others. This week we have asked everyone to show compassion, empathy and kindness with other.

We reflected about what the world is like with mercy and what it could be like if we didn’t have mercy

Meeting the chicks

Years 6 were lucky enough to be the first class that got to hold the chicks. They were really kind and thoughtful were handling them.

No pen day in Rose Class

Year 6 loved their No pen day experience, with lots of practical and computer based activities. From creating our plans for English on our chrome books to using multi-link cubes in maths to explore volume. It is to be continued after SATs.

Raising money for CAFOD in Rose class

During lent, Year 6 have been taking part in a guest the amount of Easter Chocolate in the jar. Our amount raised for CAFOD has yet to be counted up but I’m proud to reveal that our winner with a guess of 96 chocolates.

Athletics in Rose Class

During today’s PE lesson, we focused on technique, speed and stamina when running. We are now running on the balls of our feet, with high knees and pumping our arms.

SATS week begins …

Everyone came in nice and early and enjoyed some breakfast pastries and some chill time on their chrome books. SPAG and spelling completed. Well done everyone!

Year Six 2025-2026

Welcome back to our new Year Six’s. Everyone is looking so smart in their new uniforms. It’s lovely too see everyone back.

Place Value in Year 6

Smashing place value in year six. Consolidating our learning using resources. Playing games has helped us learn. This game was to make a number closest to the target number.

Voting for our Year 6 School councillors

Using our British Value of the democracy, we listened to the candidates and their proposals becoming our class representatives at school council meetings. Then we voted for our winners.

Year six – Create our own hearts

Ask us all about our learning. Each part represented the heart, blood vessels, values and cardiac muscles but which is which?

Reading milkshakes in Year 6

Year 6 have been challenged with reading a certain about of pages each week in their guided read and reading for pleasure books. If they achieve that total they will either received a milkshake or free time. If they read with their Parents/Carers, they also receive a biscuit. Here are our first winners.

06.10.25 – Science – identifying the components of blood and their roles

During this lesson, we invested the components and their roles within the blood. Each group was faced with four patients – someone who was fighting an infection; someone who has a cut; someone who has been exercising and someone who is healthy.

Looking at the platelets, white blood cell, red bloods and plasma each group managed to work out who was who.

06.10.25 – RE – Prodigal son – drama

In previous lessons, we looked at the story of the prodigal son and how his father showed unconditional love. We then brought the family to court through hot seating to determine who showed and conditional love and who didn’t and why.

20.10.25 – RE – Being Called

Another hot-seating activity, today we became Andrew when he was chosen by Jesus to become one of Jesus disciples. Drama helps us to understand the scriptures better.

03.11.25 – Science – Light travels in straight lines

Today was the first lesson diving into the scientific world of light since we were in Year 3. We deceased how rays light travels in straight lines. Our investigation let us see this in action with most of the children managing to shows us how light would travel through the wholes the card was in a straight line. For those who it didn’t work for, this also showed us that if light is blocked the light will not travel through the card.

07.11.25 – Art – Create street art with meaning

our art topic this term has been street art. We looked at perspective and scaling up. We couldn’t decorate a wall around school as we might get into a little bit of trouble. But watch this space to see if you see our artwork around school soon.

10.11.25 -RSHE- Odd Sock day

Today we launched Anti-bullying week by participating in odd sock day. We attended an assembly and Miss Summers introduced our theme for this year’s anti-bullying week, which is ‘Power for good’. Then we had fun learning the Andy and the Odd socks song called ‘Power for good’.

11.11.25 – Collective worship – remembrance

The week before Remembrance Day we created this gorgeous poppy wreath that is unique and special to remember those who died for our freedom at war.

12.11.25 – PSHE – NSPCC workshop

We had a workshop based on speaking out and staying safe with the help of Buddy the speech bubble. Year 6 learnt lots of ways that they can get support if they need it. It was a very useful and informative workshop and the children were all very engaged. They even got a sticker at the end for their hard work and involvement!

19.11.25 – PSHE – Discussion question

As part of our weekly question, our school councillors posed the question of what we can do to stop bullying. As part of anti bullying week, we discussed how we can tackle bullying and how we should not be bystanders to bullying. Our class believed that by educating others this would help to minimise bullying.

21.11.25 – PSHE – discussion question

As part of road safety week, we look park in our weekly class discussion. Today, we were debating what would be the best action for our school to take to ensure safety on the roads at the start and end of the day. Our decisions were very varied but groups worked well to decide on one possible solution.

28.11.25 – DT – Planning our playgrounds

Year 6 have been taking inspiration from local playgrounds and some designs online when designing their own playground. We plan to make a 3D structure of a playground. We need something to swing on, something to hide in and something to climb on.

08.12.25 – Singing Club – Alfred Stocks Residential Home

What a lovely afternoon singing club had at Alfred Stocks. Singing Club members of Year 1, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 all came along. We sang our hearts out, we had carols, songs and actions. Some of the residents could not believe how professional we sounded! All the children got lovely treats afterwards, thanks you Alfred Stocks!

10.12.25 – Coverdale Puppets

This afternoon we had a visit from Coverdale puppets and they performed their Christmas show called ‘Angel delight’. We found it funny and enjoyed seeing all the different puppets. We even had a little boogie to some fun music and songs throughout.

05.12.25 – DT – Beginning of the build

Our DT project, this half term has been to create a playground using different methods to create structures. Today we began our playground. At the start of the lesson we thought it was going to be very simple however that was not the case. We had to problem solve to get our structures to stand independent.

12.12.25 – DT – Perfecting our builds

During today’s lesson, we have been working on perfecting our builds. We looked at a range of methods to help our scriptures stand independently. They are starting to look good. One more lesson and they will be complete.

05.01.26 – Science – Electrical appliances

Our first lesson in this topic of science was looking at different appliances and discussing how electricity is or isn’t used within it. Some items had lights, some items moved, some items made sounds and one was there to trick us and it didn’t do anything. It was our job to work out which item did had a light, motor, or buzzer.

21.01.26 – Maths – Kilometres and miles

In maths this week, we have been converting measurements. To help us imagine it, we ran one metre, 10 metres, 100 metres and 1 km. Those children who felt up to it then ran one mile. Everyone else cheered them on as it was only 6.5 times around the track.

23.01.26 – Art – Recreating art using drama

During our art topic we have been looking at different piece of art work by different artists. Todays artist was John Singer Sargent. Do you think we have managed to recreate it?

04.02.26 – Spanish – Places in our city

This term we have been learning how we can describe our city. We know how to say where we like shopping, which cinema we go to and with who. Ask us all about it!

06.02.26 – Maths – NSPCC Number Day

NSPCC day is an opportunity to look at the wonderful work that childline do with our donation. Today, we discussed when we might seek the support of childline. We completed some PSHEE tasks to help us think about who is there to support us. We also looked at a budgeting task to help us understand the expense of planning a post SATs treat.

12.02.26 – Discussion question

This week school council meeting discussion linked to Children’s mental health week. We were given the question ‘What could make a tricky question easier?’

13.02.26 – Music – Creating a musical score

During our music topic, we have been learning about music scores. We have discussed how different instruments are used to create a romantic atmosphere, a sense of action or even tension. Last week, we looked at some graphic scores and how it was time to create our own.

13.02.26 – Art – Painting

We have been developing our knowledge of different artist throughout our painting topic. We gather ideas and took inspiration from these artists. We these drew a sketch and use different types of media to create our final image.

23.02.26- English – Alma – Suspense narrative

In English, we watch the video about Alma and her visit to a very special toy shop. We used this video to predict what happened next.

24.02.26 – Music – Ukulele Concert

Today, the whole school had a fabulous opportunity to listen to a special concert by the local ukulele group called the Dingle Ukes. They played folk songs, older pop songs and locally written songs. The children had a fantastic time listening, clapping and singing along with the music. Thank you to Wheel Meet Again group and Dingle Ukes for coming along.

27.02.26 – PSHE – Risk with taking drugs

Today Year 6 were learning about the risks associated with using different drugs either legal or illegal drugs. We know know the possible effects and risks linked to taking different drugs. We understand that some drugs are restricted or that is illegal to own, use and supply. Finally we discussed why some people might use drugs.

27.02.26 – Music – Identifying world war 1 and Two music

During our music lesson, we have been looking at the difference WW1 and WW2 music. We discussed why the two types of music sound different.

04.03.26 – Spanish – Writing

During our Spanish lessons, we have learning about how we can describe different places within our city. We have used our knowledge to write in Spanish . Look at our team work through our images.

05.03.26 – Reading – World book day

In year six, we enjoyed our last World book day at St Finbar’s. We have enjoyed a live stream and trip to our wonderful school library. We have created our own stories and book monster bookmarks. Don’t they look fabulous in their costumes!

Daffodil class were treated to a visit from our Year 6 Rose class. They read some fantastic books and shared their love of reading.

05.03.26 – World book day – Reading Buddies

During world book day, Year 6 buddied up with their little friends in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 for some reading for pleasure. Year six were really thinking about how they could confidently read and share their love of reading with the littlest learners of St Finbar’s.

06.03.26 – History – The Manchester Man

We have been learning about the industrial revolution and the change in Manchester in the 1800s. We have been working hard on developing our chronological awareness.
