Purpose of Study

Learning a foreign language gives children the opportunity to broaden their horizons, connect with other cultures and develop a deeper understanding of the world. At our school, we work in partnership with School Improvement Liverpool’s MFL team, combining the expertise of advisory teachers and native-level foreign language tutors to deliver a rich and ambitious curriculum.

The National Curriculum for Languages states that a high-quality language education should foster children’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Through weekly lessons in Spanish, supported by high-quality resources, staff training and consultation, children not only learn to communicate in another language but also develop a genuine enthusiasm for language learning.

Through the delivery of MFL, we aim to improve children’ skills in these four areas:

  • Listening and responding
  • Speaking
  • Reading and responding
  • Writing

Aims

Our modern foreign languages curriculum, delivered with the support of School Improvement Liverpool, aims to ensure that all children:

  • Develop a love of languages and confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing.
  • Acquire the vocabulary, pronunciation and grammatical structures needed to communicate in Spanish (and French).
  • Gain cultural knowledge and appreciation, learning how language and culture are connected.
  • Build the foundations for future language learning at secondary school and beyond.
  • Learn from skilled, native-level speakers who model accurate language use and bring learning to life.
  • Develop resilience, curiosity and a global outlook through meaningful language experiences.
