Purpose of Study
Music is a universal language that inspires creativity, self-expression and a sense of community. At our school, we provide a broad and balanced music curriculum that develops children’s confidence, imagination and enjoyment of making music together.
The National Curriculum for Music states that all children should perform, listen to, review and evaluate music, be taught to sing and to use their voices, and to create and compose music. They should also have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and use technology appropriately.
To achieve this, we use a blended approach:
- Kapow Primary is followed in Years 1, 2 and 6, giving children a rich experience of singing, performing, composing and listening through a carefully sequenced programme.
- Resonate Music Hub delivers specialist-led lessons in Years 3, 4 and 5, where children have the opportunity to learn instruments and take part in whole-class ensemble teaching.
Together, these approaches ensure progression, depth and variety, while instilling a lifelong love of music.
Through the delivery of Music, we aim to improve children’ skills in these four areas:
- Listening and evaluating
- Creating sounds
- Notation
- Improving and composing
Aims
Our music curriculum, delivered through Kapow Primary and Resonate Music Hub, aims to ensure that all children:
- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate a wide range of music from different traditions, genres and historical periods.
- Sing and use their voices expressively, developing confidence and musicality.
- Learn to play tuned and untuned instruments with accuracy and control, both individually and in ensembles.
- Compose and improvise music, exploring and organising sounds using notation where appropriate.
- Build an understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music (such as pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo and timbre).
- Experience the joy of making music together and develop an appreciation for music as part of human culture.
